Cool Silver: New Jersey Tercentenary Commemorative Medal

I got this piece on eBay a while back at a pretty good price for the silver content. I haven’t seen a lot of these, so I figured I’d share with the world. It’s an extremely unique design with very deep cuts and a clean matte finish. See the mini gallery after the break for some photos. It weighs just under 2oz on my cheapo scale, and is slightly bigger than a US Eagle. It’s created by Medallic Art Company of New York and edge-lettered with its hallmark plus ’999 fine silver’ and its unique numbered identifier which is fading fast with time (and one of the reasons I really, really hate edge lettering). They were issued in 1964 in both bronze and silver, and came with a really nice booklet about the Tercentenary. Out of all my bullion, it’s definitely one of the more interesting pieces I’ve got. I’ll have to work on finding some mintages on these to determine if there is any numismatic value, but it’s a nice change of pace from getting another Pan American bar or Canadian Maple. With silver prices and demand as it is right now, finding some lesser-known items is probably worth the effort.

Year in Silver 2010: Winners and Losers

At the end of each year, there’s always some obligatory survey, list, or look-back from the best and worst of that year. It’s tried and true content. Unfortunately, I’m always late. I dont have enough time to write a full listing of each and every party that comes to mind as a winner and loser, but here are the ones I absolutely had to mention. Feel free to add your own in the comments.

US Mint Re-Launches ATB 5oz Silver; Limits Dealers to 10% Profit

In what looks like a swift about-face from the US Mint two days after delaying the 5oz America the Beautiful bullion coins after complaints (from us and others) of price gouging, the Mint released a memo to authorized dealers on Thursday prohibiting them from jacking up the price over 10% of their cost, imposing order limits of no more than one 5-coin set per household, and preventing sales to employees. Well done. It’s obvious that every dealer will certainly not go a penny lower than the mandated 10%, but the mint gives them a slight amount of wiggle room with allowing for ‘reasonable shipping and handling charges’.

ATB 5oz Silver Already in Price-Gouging Zone

So much for waiting until December 6th. The long-awaited America the Beautiful 5oz bullion coin from the US Mint blew through Apmex in less than a day. That wasn’t unexpected, but what caught me was that Apmex was selling full 5-coin sets and apparently not individual pieces (yet). I can’t seem to find what they sold for, but let’s assume a reasonable price of at LEAST $1000 for the set (25oz x $30 gets you to spot , plus a healthy $250 margin). Good to see that silver demand remains high, but..

Bring on the price gouging.
